Cool Micro Fat Girl (TMC chassis)

Hello everyone!

I've been lurking on this forum for a year or so, but decided to register a few days ago to post some pics of my builds. I bought my micro a year ago, and did the basic mods to it, and built a Suzuki Samurai scale body (might post some pics of that setup also in the future).

But, a couple weeks ago I thought it was time to build something different, and so I ordered the TMC chassis, some spacers, new wheels and miclaw tires.

I named it after (or stole the name) Tim Cameron's off-road buggy, because it was my biggest source of inspiration for this build.

And this is the result. Hope you like it!

That is wicked man, I think I might have to order that chassis.

How was the build and how does everything fit?

Thanks!

The build was very straightforward. I recommend the chassis, it's a little piece of art! Only downside is the cab room, or the lack of it. It's a tight fit to squeeze all the electronics in, but luckily it's not impossible.

Only time consuming things was making the links, and cutting those side panels and hood out of a rockstar cola can

Are those stock shocks?

Did ya leave the stock links up front and just lengthened the back?

How much did you lengthen it? Also - did you use the Trail Trekker Driveshafts?

Yeah, the shocks are stock. I just painted them red for the looks, and shortened the springs to match the length of the shocks.

Actually, the rear links are about the same length as stock, and only front links are longer. I wanted the cab to sit as close to the rear axle as possible, because I think it looks the best that way, even though it would be best crawl-wise to get as much weight to the front as possible. So, in other words I had to make a little compromise between the performance and the looks.

Wheelbase is about 126mm, so it's very close to 5".

I lengthened the stock driveshafts with brass tube, and put some heat shrink over them to hide the brass. I decided not to paint them black, because the paint would scratch easily, and the shafts would look like crap in no time. But I might upgrade to the Trekker driveshafts in the future...

Thanks very much!

I chose the rc4wd beadlocks because I think those are the best looking wheels, and I wanted a little scale look to the rig, so it was also kinda my only choice in the world of vertex wheels and whatnot...

I have no idea why these wheels are so unpopular.

Looks great!
I've been seriously thinking of stretching my TMC wheelbase from 4.75" to 5" since I got the BWD wheel wideners... of course, then if I stretch it to 5" I'll be forced to get the miniqlo tires and then I'll have to stretch it to 5.25"! Will it never end!

I've been thinking of picking up a pair of the rc4wd wheels for another micro project that's on the back burner... for "scale" wheels it's either them or the CAC's.
I wish BWD would let us know what his new beadlocks look like so I can make up my mind

Awesome man - I'm looking to build something exactly like this.

Can I get the lengths of your links, both upper/lower rear & front?

Will 4WS fit in the back?

Thanks, I'm flattered to hear you like my build that much!

Link lengths, measured from the center of the cup.

Front: Upper 55mm, Lower 59mm
Rear: Upper 37mm, Lower 39mm

I don't know if the 4WS will fit. If it does, it would be a very tight fit, and the servo might restrict the articulation a little, but I think there's still hope making it work. The downside of doing so, though, is that the battery placement would be a problem. It would look really stupid on the front servo, and the only place left would be on the rear servo, and that wouldn't look much better that way either...

The only way it MIGHT look decent, is if you get a really flat cellphone battery, paint it black, and put it on the front...

Good luck on your build!

Awesome, where did you get your threaded rod from? LHS?

Is there any way you could post some more detailed pictures of inside the chassis, I want to see how you have your electronics set up.

Thanks bud!

Hows the motor performing with the QLo's?

I bought the thread rod from a local hobby store here in Finland. Should be available in every store that sells parts for model planes. I also bought some small carbon fiber tube to cover the rod.

I guess I could take a few photos of my electronics when I find some time...

The stock motor performs really well with 2s lipo. It almost has too much power for my needs, even with the miclaw tires. I should swap the wires at the motor so it would be easier to crawl slow, because there should be more "steps" in the throttle when the channel isn't inverted from the controller, at least from what I have read.
